Scene: What were you looking for?

Exercise: Write a scene, not a story
Seed: "They shouldn't have come back"
Time: 15 minutes
Genre: Crime fiction - heist

It was time.

After making sure there were no nosy old hags peeking through the windows, Lucifer climbed over the wall at the back of the house, and jumped into the backyard. Once inside, he knew it would be easy. There was no alarm system or security cameras. Not even a dog to bite him or alert anyone to the house.

Reaching the back door, he pulled a crowbar out of his backpack and, in five seconds, busted the kitchen door lock without making a sound.

The house was spotless, everything clean and neatly arranged. The kitchen was spacious, all in light tones. "A little too sterile for me," Lucifer said.

On the counter was a basket of apples, and Lucifer grabbed one. No point in letting it go to waste.

Without wasting any more time, he picked up the crowbar again and started searching the house for the safe. According to the information he had been given, it was in the office upstairs.

Halfway up the stairs, there was a window overlooking the front of the house, and a car had just pulled up.

It was the owners.

"Why are they here? They shouldn’t have come back."

Lucifer rushed upstairs, looking for a place to hide. Under the bed? No, drawers underneath. Inside a closet? Nop, they have an open closet.

"Fuck it. Whatever happens, happens," he muttered, and lay down in the bathtub, pulling the curtain.

Reflection

I felt that i was a bit hard to write this one out. Specially when I wanted to describe the scene but keep the pace. And ideas kept popping up, but I didn't know how to put them together.

Nevertheless it was a good exercise. I just need to keep practicing.
